Make classic comfort food without the fuss. This easy Salisbury Steak recipe uses a slow cooker to create tender beef patties smothered in a rich mushroom gravy, perfect for a hearty weeknight dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 lbs ground beef
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 8 ounces cremini mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, milk, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix gently until just combined; do not overmix.
  2. Form the mixture into 6 equal oval patties.
  3. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the patties for 2-3 minutes per side until browned. You may need to do this in batches.
  4. Transfer the seared patties to your slow cooker.
  5. In the same skillet, add the chopped onion and sliced mushrooms. Cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  6. Sprinkle the flour over the onions and mushrooms and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
  7. Slowly whisk in the beef broth and soy sauce until the mixture is smooth. Add the dried thyme. Bring the gravy to a simmer, stirring until it thickens slightly.
  8. Pour the mushroom gravy mixture over the beef patties in the slow cooker.
  9. Cover and cook on LOW for 4 to 6 hours, or on HIGH for 2 to 3 hours, until the beef is cooked through and tender.
  10. Serve the Salisbury steak and gravy immediately over mashed potatoes or rice.

Notes

  • For an even richer gravy, substitute 1/2 cup of the beef broth with red wine.
  • If you prefer a thicker gravy, mix 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of cold water and stir it into the gravy during the last 30 minutes of cooking.
  • This recipe makes a fantastic budget friendly dinner when served with simple steamed green beans.
